Julia Root (she/her), Director of Development and Policy

Julia is an advocate and ally for reentry justice who brings extensive experience in state workforce and reentry policy. She was previously a senior policy associate for a national reentry workforce provider and in that role managed the organization’s California policy work and state revenue strategy.

As CROP’s Director of Development, Julia manages the organization’s grants and contracts, supports program development and builds relationships with funders, agency partners and policymakers. Julia is a steering committee member of the California Asset Building Coalition and a member of the National Skills Coalition, Skills for California Leadership Team.

Julia is a 2020 Economic Security Policy Fellow with the Women’s Foundation Solis Policy Institute.  Previously, Julia was a Research Fellow at The Governance Lab, an action research institute at NYU focused on using data and technology to improve the policymaking process and an Associate Director of Development for a social service provider in New Orleans.

She has also worked as a career advisor for students of applied sciences and as strategy consultant for two start-ups. She is a long-time advocate for the role of nonprofits and CBOs to deliver the innovative programming and policy change that advances social justice. Julia has an MPA from NYU Wagner and a BA in Literature from UC San Diego.
